NAIDOC Week is a time to celebrate the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year, we honour Aunty Dulcie Flower AM, a finalist for her remarkable contributions to activism, advocacy, and community development.

Born in Cairns in 1938, Aunty Dulcie's journey is deeply rooted in her Torres Strait Islander heritage. She worked tirelessly, starting from a timber mill to becoming a registered nurse and midwife. Her advocacy began with the Aborigines Progressive Association and continued with the Federal Council for the Advancement of Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders (FCAATSI), where she campaigned for cultural recognition, industrial equality, health, education, and land ownership.
Aunty Dulcie helped establish the Aboriginal Medical Service Co-operative (AMS Redfern), a vital community service, and held numerous high-profile roles, including her appointment to the Torres Strait Advisory Board of ATSIC. Her contributions have been recognised nationally, culminating in her appointment as a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 2019.
At Changebility, we celebrate Aunty Dulcie’s values and her incredible work in the community. Her dedication to justice, equality, and cultural recognition aligns with our mission. As we celebrate NAIDOC Week 2024, let us honour Aunty Dulcie Flower AM and her unwavering commitment to making the world a better place for all.
